  Very welcoming, the messages every week are wonderful. Pastor speaks the truth and always puts it in a way that is very relatable and easy to understand.

  Way too many high fives. Seriously, it was terribly uncomfortable. Came by myself and the middle aged woman at the front door greeted me with her hand straight up, I had no idea what she was doing.. I looked at her funny and she just pushed her hand closer to me.. Finally got it and gave her a high five back.. Kinda laughed, thought she was a bit odd, but shrugged it off. She guessed that I was new so she insisted on walking me to the service.. And then it got weird. We had to walk down a long hallway and the entire way was a line of about 9 people, she made sure to tell everyone I was new and I had to give all 9 ppl.. Wait, yup! You guessed it, a high five.. But it wasn't over, we turned the corner and there was more! I must've high fived 12 people before I finally made it into the service.. I was nervous laughing and pretty uncomfortable.. I mean I completely understood they were trying to be welcoming, but really?! It was a bit much.. I thought the high fives were over.. Mid service the pastor instructed everyone to greet the ones around them - with a high five!! I couldn't believe it, I was laughing at this point, but I was also feeling an urge to protest. That's what I did. An older man greeted me with his hand held high, I just simply put out my hand to imply, "I'd rather shake your hand." Which he did! And we smiled and said hello. I said my name is Hope, good to meet you. And he told me his name and said it was good to meet me.Then I quickly sat down and rummaged through my purse until the added high five moment was over.. On my way out there were a few final high fives. Too many. Now let me just say I deeply love people, I'm in social work and I'm not afraid to touch a persons hand, quite the opposite! I enjoy meeting new people and warmly saying hello with a hand shake and sharing our names with each other to possibly remember them later and perhaps start a friendship! High fives just didn't cut it, and there were far to many.. Honestly, I don't remember the service.. I bet it was great.. Just could not get past the stiff (and apparently) routine high fives that all these people were so accustomed to.

  In response to the post regarding the "too many high fives," I definitely see how this could be a little overwhelming to a guest, especially when stepping into this new culture for the first time. Journey's mission statement is to "Exist for those not yet here," and that calling is toward an unchurched people group. Most of the congregation is made up of younger people (20's to early 30's) who did not grow up in the church, and are seeking God in a way that is brand new for them. Journey goes to great lengths to make sure that all who walk through their doors feel incredibly welcomed.
  
  The high-fives are Journey's way to present themselves to a younger generation, to let everyone know that this is not a place of judgment, ritual, or rigidity. Even the "dress code" is pretty much "come as you are," and you'll see most people wearing jeans/shorts/tee shirts. Journey is trying to break the traditional mold of the church in showing everyone the hope, redemption, and love of Jesus. After all, isn't that what we are supposed to be doing as followers of Christ? Church, after all, should not be a country club, but a "hospital" for the broken...and I think we all fall into that category.
